WHAT YOU CAN VISIT IN THE DANUBE DELTA STARTING FROM DELTA PARADISE RESORT:
1. SULINA - the story of the old lighthouse, maritime cemetery and the Palace of the Danube European Commission
SULINA - Former city of sailors, adventurers and pirates, Sulina is located in the most easterly point of mainland Europe, accessible only by water because it is not directly linked to the Romanian road network. The air full of history and mystery of this town can be found by visiting the maritime cemetery, the two lighthouses, the churches (St. Alexander and St. Nicholas) and the Palace of the European Danube Commission. Sulina is the sunniest town in Romania! You cannot leave Sulina without a dip in the Black Sea Sulina beach that is considered the last unspoiled beach in Europe. The beach is 150 meters wide with an extremely fine sand, filtered by the Danube and the sea is not salty as in the south coastline of the Black Sea, but has a sweet taste.
2. LETEA FOREST - the northernmost subtropical forest in Europe and the only oak forest in the world increased on a sea bank
LETEA FOREST - Even if you are not passionate for the wildness of nature, Letea Forest is one of the places that we should visit at least once in life, as is the northernmost subtropical forest in Europe and the only oak forest in the world increased on a sea bank. Letea is the oldest natural reservation in Romania (1938) and covers an area of over 5,000 ha. The fairy-tale landscape of the forest includes forest strips alternating with dunes, virtually the entire forest grows on sand; over 500 species of trees and climbing plants and 3,000 species of birds and animals, of which 2,000 insects; the only place in Europe where lianas developed here because the seeds brought from Africa by migratory birds; wild horses live here in freedom. A few kilometers from the forest, take a dip in Salt Lake.
3. CRIŞAN - the fishing village was established after 1856 under the name Carmen Sylva at the request of Queen Elizabeth and was a place of inspiration and relaxation for the Royal House of Romania. Although it has a stretch of 7 km, Crișan village is located on both sides of the Sulina branch.
CRIŞAN – the fishing village was established after 1856 under the name Carmen Sylva at the request of Queen Elizabeth and was a place of inspiration and relaxation for the Royal House of Romania. Although it has a stretch of 7 km, Crișan village is located on both sides of the Sulina branch, which transformed the village into a veritable hub of departure to other places in the Danube Delta: north to Old Chilia, pond Matita, Mila 23 due south to Caraorman village and the arm of St. George west to Tulcea and east to Sulina.
4. MILA 23 - If you want to become an Olympic and world champion, you should see Mila 23 – the birthplace of Ivan Patzaichin (b. 1949) - the famous Romanian canoeing Olympic and world champion. The name of the village comes from nautical mile distance that mark the old route of the Sulina branch. Mile 23 is the ideal location for a day trip in a traditional fishing village in the Danube Delta!
5. CARAORMAN – The Black Forest (in Turkish) - The landscape is identical with the one in the Letea Forest and includes: sand dunes, which often exceed 7 m high, reaching up to 9 meters high and the Caraorman Forest with lianas and oaks (the forest was declared in 1940 monument of nature). In the Black Forest lives the oldest and largest oak in Delta, over 30 meters high and 4 meters thick, with an oddly shaped, named: The Knelt Oak.
6. THRESHOLD OF PORTIȚA – at the boundary between the Danube Delta and the Black Sea, bypassing Lake Razim, we discover the wonderful the Threshold of Portița, where you can sunbathe in a peaceful atmosphere and you can swim in the blue waters of the Black Sea.
THE DOLOSMAN CAPE - reveals the ruins of the Greek Argamum - Orgame fortress and the steep rocky cliffs of the only sea-wall of the Romania coastline
THRESHOLD OF PORTIȚA - at the boundary between the Danube Delta and the Black Sea, bypassing Lake Razim, we discover the wonderful the Threshold of Portița, where you can sunbathe in a peaceful atmosphere and you can swim in the blue waters of the Black Sea. At Portiţa even the Black Sea is blue as the houses from the tourist complex that are painted in blue and white. In our journey towards Portiţa we will visit the DOLOSMAN CAPE - a limestone cliff that extends over a distance of 3 km, with a height of 29 m, the only sea-wall of the Romania coastline.
7. PERIŞORU - if there is love at first sight, the beach of the Black Sea Perişoru best describe this feeling! If you want square kilometers of deserted beach, crystal clear water of the Black Sea, whole clams ... then Perişoru is the ideal location for a day trip to the Black Sea! However, do not forget to take water, juice, food, etc., because at the Perişoru you will not find any kiosks or shops and if you have a little luck, not too many tourists! therefore be ready to feel as the owners of a beach for a day!
8. RAZIM or RAZELM LAKE - 10 minutes from our tourism complex, find another sea: Lake Razim, where we advise you to go and assist to one of the most romantic sunsets of your life! Lake Razim has an area of 415 sq. km and a maximum depth of 2.8 m, being the largest lake in Romania. Razim Lagoon is tied with St. George Arm through Dranov and Dunavăţ channels, where it is located our resort.
9. From Dunavăţ Mouth, at the north of Lake Razim, you can see POPINA ISLAND (98 ha). In the years 1948-1994, Popina Island was a natural reservation, after 1994 it became a strictly protected area of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reservation. Popina Island is the only place in the world where the large green grasshopper Isophya dobrogensis lives.
10.LAKE PUIU AND THE RED LAKE - are considered the heart of the Danube Delta and some of the best fishing spots in the Delta because they are large and deep lakes and the channel between them is placed parallel to the direction of the Danube flow has a strong current, which oxygenates the water and attracts a lot of fishes.
11. SAINT GEORGE - where Danube embraces the Black Sea to the shores of the widest beach in Europe (2 km)
SAINT GEORGE – the Black Sea beach is the widest beach in Europe (2 km) and you can reach the beach on foot in about 20-30 minutes or with "trocariciul", a tractor with a trailer specially designed to transport people. The Lighthouse of St. George has a height of 50 m and is designed to warn the ships when they approach the Danube mouths as there are many submarine sandbanks that made the navigation dangerous. The signaling is done with two white flashes every 7.2 seconds. Flowing into the Black Sea through the arm of St. George, the Danube meets BUIVAL HEAD (left side), one of the most dynamic natural processes areas in the Danube Delta, subject to erosion and displacement in the Black Sea.
12. SACALIN ISLAND - The newest island in Romania
On the right side of St. George Arm, is located the newest island in Romania: SACALIN ISLAND. Due to the alluvial deposits brought by the Danube, in a few years, it is expected that the island will merge with the mainland in the west, closing Melea lagoon and transforming it into a kind of a coastline lake. In the south of the island is the wreck of the tug Tuzla, strand by 70s.
13. ENISALA FORTRESS - the only surviving medieval fortress in Dobrogea
ENISALA FORTRESS – The Enisala military fortress was part of the Genoese colony chain which contained the Delta cities: Chilia and Likostomion. In the period 1397-1416 the city of Enisala was a part of the defenses of the Romanian Land during the reign of Mircea the Elder. After Dobrogea was conquest by the Turks in 1419-1420, the fortress became an Ottoman military garrison. Subsequently, following the Turks submission beyond the mouth of the Danube to the White Fortress (Cetatea Albă) and Chilia (1484) and the formation of the sand cordons that separates Lake Razim from the Black Sea, the city was abandoned in the XVI century, because wasn’t matching with the Turkish politics and economics.
